Aftermath

air, where a mailbox should be
*

That mailbox is two doors down from me. I don't know those neighbors, but I think they're renters - that house tends to have a high turnover. They seem like they might be decent enough people, though -- they've got a lot of Christmas decorations (garlands, wreaths, lighted deer, etc.) around their house.

If any locals happened to catch the Channel 6 11 o'clock news last night, the report that was "live, on-scene", (which was a lie, that was taped probably a half-hour earlier than it was aired), that reporter was standing on the edge of my yard, and my (intact) mailbox was in the shot. The cops and the bomb squad eventually left around 11.

I think the general consensus is that the mailbox bombing was random and probably the work of some bored teenagers. Of course I now eye suspiciously every car that drives down my street.

My brother-in-law, an attorney and college professor and dean, suggested last night that during the midst of it all, I should run out of my house towards the cops, with my television remote in hand, yelling, "I've got the remote! I've got the remote!", and see what happens. Sage advice from the family legal expert.

The ironic part of it all is that I forgot to check my mail yesterday afternoon, and today, after very carefully opening my mailbox with a long tree branch, there was a package in there. (I knew it was in there last night, and it was killing me that I couldn't go out and get it.) I wonder what would have happened if I had tried to check my mail while the cops were still there, and then pulled a package out of my mailbox? Think I would have been tackled?

Jeez Mary...I would say you should move into my neck of the woods but we have bored teenagers too.
I'd be scared to check the mail too!

How scary, Mary! Perhaps it's time for you to move into the 'burbs with us PUD (planned unit development) dwellers! Stay safe. I would have been scared to touch that package of yours!
