Quick Question...

*
...I need some knitterly wisdom. Anyone have a link to a chart that lists the average head circumferences of kids? Or, more specifically, can anyone ballpark the average head circumference of an 11-year-old boy?

I gotta quick birthday hat to knit by Sunday afternoon....

Hiya Mary! Here's a pattern for a basic hat (http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/bevs-basic-hat.html) that has an 80 st cast on for 10-13 yo kids. Here's a site (http://www.yarnstandards.com/headsize.html) that show a child's head circumference as 18".

Hope this helps!

Hi, Mary, allow me to add to Beth's post with info direct from the Harlot herself (her book Knitting Rules, pg 110). Stephanie gives children's sizes as follows:
2-5 years 18 in / 45 cm
5-10 years 19 in / 48 cm
Small adult 20 in / 50 cm

Steph also gives a couple of methods for determining the hat height. She recommends 6 in / 15 cm tall for Child size.

Those sound about right to me. I'd put some ribbing into it to guarantee a good fit. Good luck!

I was also going to give you the Yarn Harlot's sizes from Knitting rules pg 110 but Jeanne beat me to it :)

and having just made two hats for my Dad who lives half way across the country from me, I'd like to add that ribbing is much more forgiving and makes for a better fitting hat than stockinette :)

Once they are 11, they probably have almost a full-sized adult head. Probably can just knit what you'd wear!
